Greetings,
Welcome to the quarterly newsletter for MMS
and POMS users. Our newsletter is one year old with
this issue and we hope you have found it to be a
useful tool in your office. If this is your first issue,
we invite you to take a look at our website at
http://ww
w.systemsdesignnw.com
for more
information and previous newsletters.
This issue is focused primarily on the National
Provider Identifier (NPI) and how it will be
implemented in the MMS and POMS software.
Beginning the transition now will help minimize cash
flow disruptions when the NPI is fully implemented on
May 23, 2007.
| NPI - What is it? |
 |
|
The NPI is a standard, unique identifier for providers
of healthcare. This number will replace the UPIN and
will replace all provider numbers with health plans.
The NPI consists of 10 digits and stays with a
provider no matter where a provider might practice.
Organizations and institutions also need an NPI. In a
group practice, each doctor will have their own NPI
and there will be an NPI for the group.
If you have not applied for your NPI yet, you will
need to use 2 websites.
First, go to http://www.wpc-
edi.com/codes/taxonomy
to find your provider's
specialty code.
Second, apply for your NPI at
https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/NPPES/Welcome.do.

| Implementation Process for Electronic Claims |
 |
|
Once you have your NPIs, there are 4 steps needed
to include the NPI in your electronic claims:
- Have Systems Design add all of the NPI fields and
programs.
- Enter the NPIs for your doctors, therapists,
referring doctors and hospitals.
- Submit the NPI update form to Noridian
(Medicare) with your start date.
- Update all other insurance payers with your
NPI.
The software is currently being tested and we
anticipate release sometime after December 1st. It
will probably be helpful to start gathering the NPIs of
your referring doctors now.
|
| Implementation Process for Paper Claims |
 |
|
In order to accommodate the NPI, a new 1500 claim
form has been developed. From January 1st until April
1st, insurance companies will accept either the old or
the new form. Once you are ready to use the new
forms, we will help you change the form number of
your payers. MMS clients will use form 5 and POMS
clients will change to form 6.
You will want to keep a few of the old 1500's. Some
very small insurance companies will be allowed to use
the old form for another year, but we don't know
which ones that will be. If you want more details on
the 1500, go to http://www.nucc.org
and click
on "1500 Claim Form".

The top 10 excuses for when you are caught
sleeping on the job
(Brought to you as a public service...)
10. They told me at the blood bank this might
happen.
9. Whew! Guess I left the top off the liquid
paper.
8. I wasn't sleeping! I was meditating on the
mission statement and envisioning a new
paradigm
7. I was testing the keyboard for drool
resistance.
6. Actually I'm doing a "Stress Level Elimination
Exercise Plan" (SLEEP) I learned it at the last
mandatory seminar you made me attend.
5. Darn! Why did you interrupt me? I had almost
figured out a solution to our biggest problem.
4. Boy, that cold medicine I took last night just
won't wear off!
3. Ah, the unique and unpredictable circadian
rhythms of the workaholic!
2. I wasn't sleeping, I was trying to pick up
contact lens without hands.
1. Amen.
